چکیده

Background Stamina is a key component within all major tasks necessary for proper motor function. Particularly in individuals in the second half of their lifespan, there is a direct correlation between diminished stamina and increased morbidity and mortality rates. Currently, there are numerous studies validating the relationship between stamina and varying physical capabilities. In this context, a number of studies confirm the positive effect of a walking program to enhance stamina (as measured by the maximal oxygen intake [VO2 max]), which in turn is also linked with a highly reduced probability of cardiovascular illness. Frequent attempts have been made in the past to increase the effectiveness of stamina training by the addition of supplemental tools such as weighted wrist bands, dumbbells or walking poles. The Xco-Trainer is such a new tool, which is intended to stimulate increased activity of the upper body musculature during walking. And indeed, a representative cross-over study by the Institute of Medical Physics (IMP) of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg confirmed that walking at a constant speed with the Xco-Trainer yielded a significantly greater metabolic and cardiac response than walking at a similar pace without a weight. The study at hand, which was conducted within the framework of a diploma thesis under the auspices of the IMP, explores (by use of longitudinal sectional design) to what extent the tool’s effectiveness, as previously verified by earlier studies, could be further improved with more refined adaptations geared specifically towards endurance performance, and other health-related goals.

Verification of the Accuracy of the Delivered Dose in Pelvic and Breast Cancer Radiotherapy by in-vivo Semi-Conductor Dosimetry

Introduction: Delivering maximum dose to tumor and minimum dose to normal tissues is the most important goal in radiotherapy. According to ICRU, the maximum acceptable uncertainty in the delivered dose compared to the prescribed dose should be lower than 5%, and this is because of the relationship between absorbed dose, tumor control and normal tissue damage. Absorbed dose accuracy is investiga...

Dosimetric comparison of 3-dimensional conformal and intensity-modulated radiotherapy techniques for whole breast irradiation in the prone and supine positions

Background: The aim of this study was to compare the differences of the dosimetric parameters between three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) and simultaneous-integrated boost intensity-modulated radiotherapy (SIB-IMRT) techniques in the prone and supine positions for breast irradiation. Materials and Methods: Ten patients underwent a computed tomography simulation in both the prone a...

Dosimetric Comparison of Various Radiotherapeutic Treatment Plans Using Cobalt-60 and Linac for Prostate Cancer

Introduction: This study was designed to evaluate dosimetric parameters such as rectal dose, bladder dose, integral dose (ID), homogeneity index (HI) and conformity index (CI) in various treatment plans for prostate cancer. Materials and Methods: Pelvic computed tomography (CT) scans of 27 patients were acquired and transferred to the RTDosePLAN treatment planning system. For each patient, 8 co...

Study of multifunctional PLGA-SPION nanoparticles loaded with Gemcitabine as radiosensitizer

Abstract This study aimed to modify the biological response of cells to ionizing radiation by combination therapy using radio-sensitizer agent and anticancer drug. Super paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) were prepared and used with gemcitabine (Gem). These two agents were encapsulated simultaneously into poly (D, L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) to form multifunc...

Computer-Aided Tinnitus Detection based on Brain Network Analysis of EEG Functional Connectivity

Background: Tinnitus known as a central nervous system disorder is correlated with specific oscillatory activities within auditory and non-auditory brain areas. Several studies in the past few years have revealed that in the most tinnitus cases, the response pattern of neurons in auditory system is changed due to auditory deafferentation, which leads to variation and disruption of the brain net...

Dosimetric Study of Tissue Heterogeneity Correction for Breast Conformal Radiotherapy

Introduction: Heterogeneity correction is an important parameter in dose calculation for cancer patients where it may be cause inaccuracy in dose calculation as a result of different densities of patients. This study studied the impact of dose calculation of breast cancer patients with and without heterogeneity correction. Material and Methods: Twenty breast cancer patients were treated with Th...
